Romano Reveals When Decision On Alonso Could Be Made Amid Reports That Liverpool Have Agreed 3 Year Deal

Liverpool won’t make a decision on the managerial situation before the end of the season, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Arne Slot is under even more pressure after a poor 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday evening.

There were some spurious rumours circulating that Xabi Alonso had already reached an agreement to take over at Anfield, but Romano is adamant that the Reds won’t decide on Slot’s future before an “internal review” this summer:

“I saw many questions in the chat about this one. Is [it] true or is [it] not true that Xabi Alonso has agreed already a three-year contract with Liverpool? At the moment, there is nothing done agreed in talks advanced between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool. I can guarantee that nothing has been decided.”

“At the end of the season, Liverpool will have an internal review involving players, managers, and all people at the club. So there is going to be an internal conversation to review the season, but at the moment, nothing is decided, nothing is agreed with Xabi Alonso.”

“There is an appreciation, of course, former Liverpool player, top coach. So for sure, between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool, the feelings are positive, but nothing at all has been agreed as of today.”

What are the odds of Slot leaving Liverpool?

The Dutchman is currently 8/1 to be the next Premier League manager sacked, so bookmakers do not expect him to be departing Anfield anytime soon.

With there being 9 league fixtures left, there would be little point in axeing Slot at this stage of the season anyway. For now, fans will have to remain patient until discussions take place this in June/July.

Alonso remains the red-hot favourite to replace Slot

The Galatasaray defeat will only have reinforced the belief that Slot won’t be in the dugout in August.

Some bookies have made Alonso odds-on to be in charge of the Reds at the start of next campaign. Luis Enrique is the only other candidate with relatively low odds, but most expect him to sign a new contract with PSG.
