Bruno Guimaraes has reacted to Newcastle United’s Champions League last-16 first-leg draw against Barcelona.

The Magpies looked set to take a 1-0 lead into next Wednesday’s second-leg tie at the Camp Nou through Harvey Barnes’ 86th-minute opener.

Four minutes of stoppage time were added but it was in the fifth minute when referee Marco Guida awarded a Barca penalty after Dani Olmo made the most of a slight touch from Malick Thiaw.

Lamine Yamal barely got a sniff after being pocketed by Lewis Hall but the 18-year-old sensation had the final say after converting his spot-kick in what was the last kick of the game.

Bruno Guimaraes on Newcastle United’s draw v Barcelona

Although the night ended on a painful note, Newcastle were much improved from their 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in the league phase in September.

Guimaraes captained United that evening but was unavailable to feature this time around as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old is currently in his homeland of Brazil completing the first part of his rehabilitation, but that didn’t stop him from cheering on his teammates last night.

Taking to Instagram after the game, Guimaraes wrote: “Tremendous effort from the boys, couldn’t ask for more! Very unlucky in the end. We go again next week.”

Bruno Guimaraes injury latest

Guimaraes will remain sidelined for next Wednesday’s second leg clash in Barcelona and the Tyne-Wear derby at home to Sunderland four days later.

He’ll then miss Brazil’s two friendlies against France and Croatia but could be back after the international break when Newcastle travel to Crystal Palace on April 11.

“I think the time frame will be the time frame really on this injury, I don't think there's any miracle cure for him,” Eddie Howe said previously. “I think it will be a couple of months, we're probably looking at the end of the international break in March for his return.

“A massive blow for us at a key stage of the season. He's devastated but it is what it is, we can't do anything about it. We just have to try and get him back safely and other players have to step up in his absence.

“We're going to miss Bruno's many, many strengths. He's multi-talented and that's why he's such a special player.

“This season he's scored goals, created goals, controlled games for us and that's why taking him out of the team for any length of time is such a negative for us, but I always believe there's a way without someone, then other players have to step up and they have to give different qualities.”

Bruno Guimaraes eyeing earliest possible returb

It’s now been a month since Guimaraes last played for the Magpies when he hobbled off in the closing stages of the 2-1 win away to Tottenham Hotspur.

No player enjoys sitting on the sidelines but this is a new experience for the Brazilian, who had barely missed a game for Newcastle until now.

After learning the extent on his injury, Guimaraes wrote: “As previously reported, for the first time in 10 years of my career, I will have to spend some time away from the pitch. I’m very saddened, but certain that god knows all things.

“A muscle injury will keep me out for a few weeks, but it will help strengthen me and ensure I’m even more prepared for what lies ahead. Thank you all for the support, messages and concern. See you soon.”
