The Chargers have re-signed Del'Shawn Phillips to a two-year, $7.5 million contract

The Los Angeles Chargers have been busy early on this offseason. After head coach Jim Harbaugh revamped his coaching staff, the team has been active since the opening of the legal tampering period on Monday. While the Chargers are exploring external options in free agency, they are also looking to bring back some of their own players whose deals are up.

One of the more underrated guys in that group is special teams ace Del’Shawn Phillips, who is fresh off an All-Pro campaign with Los Angeles. While he certainly isn’t the flashiest player in the world, the Chargers made it clear that they wanted to bring him back to town, and it seems like they managed to accomplish that on Wednesday morning.

An undrafted free agent in 2019, Phillips initially broke into the NFL as a linebacker with the Atlanta Falcons. While he spent training camp with the team, he was part of their final roster cuts, and he had to wait a couple of months before he would find his way to the Buffalo Bills. Phillips would eventually make his NFL debut in 2020, as he briefly appeared in two games.

Phillips established himself as a solid special teams player in 2021 with the New York Jets, but he only lasted one year with them. Since then, Phillips has spent a pair of seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and one with the Houston Texans before he signed with the Chargers for the 2025 campaign. That ended up being Phillips’ breakout season, as he racked up 37 tackles and one sack, despite playing primarily on special teams.

After leading the league in special teams tackle last years, Phillips earned a spot on the All-Pro Second Team, the first time he has received that honor. Unsurprisingly, Phillips was drawing interest on the open market, but he’s opted to stay with Los Angeles, as he re-signed with the team on a two-year, $7.5 million contract.

Chargers Still Have Several Big Needs to Fill This Offseason

Keeping Phillips around is a solid piece of business for the Chargers. Not only is he a stud on special teams, but he can also sub in on defense and get to the quarterback when needed. That’s not why Los Angeles is re-signing him, but he can be a bit of a gadget player for Harbaugh on defenses if needed.

Even with this move, though, there’s still quite a bit of work that the Chargers need to do in order to take the sort of step forward that they are hoping to take in 2026. To this point, though, Los Angeles hasn’t made the sort of major splash fans were hoping for, and with the majority of the big-name free agents off the board, the team may need to wait until the upcoming NFL Draft for that move to take place.
