Patriots sign 3-time Pro Bowler to bargain $9 million contract

The New England Patriots picked up a great free agent addition on Wednesday.

It's a bargain deal as the Patriots sign three-time Pro Bowl safety Kevin Byard to a one-year contract for $9 million, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Byard most recently played for the Chicago Bears after previously starring for the Tennessee Titans.

He's 32 years old now and still a star player.

Byard was originally a third-round pick by the Titans in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Middle Tennessee State.

He didn't do much in his first season, but in his second season, he took the NFL by storm with eight interceptions and 87 tackles to go with 16 passes defensed.

Byard picked off another four passes in 2018 and five in 2019.

He had one INT in 2020, then five in 2021 and four in 2022.

He was moved midway through the 2023 season from the Titans to the Eagles, for whom he made one interception.

Then it was the Bears the last two seasons, first with one INT in 2024 and then seven picks in 2025.

Byard has 36 career INTs and 972 tackles.

He's as good of a playmaker as they get in the secondary, and any step lost by aging is made up for by his immense experience.

Byard comes across as a bargain for the Pats, too, and a great way to try to get back to the Super Bowl.
