Liverpool stance on Arne Slot future emerges after Galatasaray loss

Arne Slot’s tenure has been under scrutiny throughout the season.

Arne Slot is under increasing pressure during a difficult second season in charge of Liverpool. The Reds were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday night in Istanbul, with Mario Lemina scoring the only goal early in the first half.

Liverpool must overturn their deficit in the second leg at Anfield next week after facing Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this weekend, with as many as 14 players potentially set to miss the clash.

Slot’s tenure has been under scrutiny throughout the season, with Liverpool battling for a top-four finish rather than the title. Club legend Jamie Carragher has voiced concern over the team’s form and the manager’s future at Anfield.

“This team is just a million miles off where it was supposed to be this season, which was that we would be talking about them the way we speak about Bayern Munich right now,” Carragher said on CBS Sports.

“That was the whole point of Liverpool spending over £400m in the summer, to go to the next step from winning the Premier League to winning the Champions League.

“And we are talking about a team who now have to change a deficit against Galatasaray, which I think they will. But I don’t have any hope for Liverpool going any further than that if it is PSG in the next round, as I think it may be.

“And that for me is a big worry. It is not just a defeat, I think the performances from Liverpool this season are a big worry for the manager. At no stage of this season have I ever thought Liverpool were in control of a football match.”

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has provided the latest update on the future of Arne Slot. According to Ornstein, the Reds remain firmly behind Slot, who is under contract until 2027, and want him to continue as head coach.

The club’s hierarchy are convinced that he is the right man to turn things around and lead the Premier League champions back to success. He said on the Athletic Podcast: “Liverpool, from what we hear, are steadfastly behind Arne Slot and he’s under contract until 2027 and they want him to be their coach.

“The hierarchy are determined that he is the man to get things right. If they were looking at a recruitment process for coaches, he’s said to be the exact profile that they would be looking at and that there’s not people on the market that they think better suit what they’re looking for.

“That they’re happy with him. I’m expecting this to go on and that the club get to the summer in whatever shape. I don’t think taking out the head coach is on Liverpool’s agenda at all.”
