Green Bay Packers see Aaron Jones re-sign with NFC North rival in 2026 NFL free agency

On March 11, 2024, the Green Bay Packers announced that they had signed Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs in NFL free agency. The move was met with great enthusiasm by fans. Not only did Green Bay add a one-time NFL rushing leader, but they also, at the time, had Aaron Jones on the roster. Fans envisioned a backfield of Jacobs and Jones running all over the league.

It was a wonderful 30 minutes, wasn’t it?

Not long after Jacobs’ signing was announced, the Packers released Jones. He subsequently signed with the Minnesota Vikings for just $1 million more than what Green Bay had offered him.

Jones had arguably the best season of his career in 2024, his first with the Vikings. He had a career-high 1,138 rushing yards and five touchdowns that year. Last season, though, he was limited by injury and only appeared in five games.

In 2025, Jones had 548 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Not long ago, it was reported that Minnesota had decided to release Jones as they cleared away salary cap space. This, once again, had fans wondering if Jacobs and Jones could team up on the Packers roster.

Alas, it is not to be.

Jones and the Vikings have agreed to a smaller contract for the 2026 NFL season:

As seen in the post above, Jones will make $5.5 million in 2026 while playing for the Vikings.

Just as was the case in Green Bay, he is incredibly popular among the fans and in the locker room. It is no surprise that he was voted a team captain last year, and likely will be again.
