Canadian receiver John Metchie III is signing a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
The 25-year-old spent the 2025 season with the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets after being traded in October. He played 16 regular-season games, made seven starts, and caught 33 passes for 364 yards and two touchdowns.
The five-foot-eleven, 187-pound target was originally a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He missed his entire rookie season after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia but made a full recovery and played 29 regular-season games over the next two seasons.
Over 45 career regular-season NFL games, Metchie III has made 10 starts and caught 73 passes for 686 yards and three touchdowns.
The native of Taipei, Taiwan, who was raised primarily in Brampton, Ont., played collegiately at the University of Alabama alongside Panthers quarterback Bryce Young. Metchie III recorded 155 receptions for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns with the Crimson Tide, helping the team win the National Championship Game in 2020. He was also a two-time winner of the Jon Cornish Trophy.
Metchie III is the younger brother of longtime CFL defensive back Royce Metchie.
