The Dallas Cowboys have had a slow start to the 2026 NFL offseason. After many expected Jerry Jones and company to spend big money to push towards being a Super Bowl contender next season, the team has failed to make any high-impact moves.

Rashan Gary was acquired from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick. That move is the biggest addition so far for the Cowboys.

While the Gary move is a solid addition, Dallas needs more. Jones and the front office will need to get aggressive in free agency and potentially the trade market, but the 2026 NFL Draft will give the team an opportunity to improve as well.

Keeping that in mind, the Cowboys have been connected to a potential “gem” in the draft. This player would be an incredibly big sleeper addition for Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys Could Target ‘Gem’ to Support Dak Prescott

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine took a look at one potential “gem” target for each NFL team in the NFL Draft. When it came to the Cowboys, he suggested Wyoming tight end John Michael Gyllenborg.

“The Cowboys have Jake Ferguson to handle all in-line tight end duties,” Ballentine wrote. “What they don’t have is a dynamic athlete on the depth chart who can be the ‘move’ tight end in 12 personnel. That’s exactly what Gyllenborg could be.”

Standing in at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Gyllenborg played all four years of his college career at Wyoming. He totaled 80 receptions for 1,023 yards and seven touchdowns.

NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein provided a breakdown of what Gyllenborg brings to the field. He sees potential, but also thinks there is a chance that the tight end never develops into an impact player at the professional level.

“An athletic move tight end, Gyllenborg has the traits to be picked on Day 3, even though some inconsistencies show up on tape. Gyllenborg has added good muscle on his frame but is more suited for blocking in space than handling in-line action due to a lack of consistent tenacity at the point of attack,” Zierlein wrote. “He has the potential to attack defenses vertically from the slot but is in dire need of better route-running fundamentals and catch consistency. Gyllenborg’s upside might be worth a swing, but TE3/4 could be his ceiling.”

What Moves Have the Dallas Cowboys Made This Offseason?

Outside of the already mentioned Gary trade, Dallas had made a few other additions as well.

The Cowboys agreed to terms on a three-year, $33 million contract with safety Jalen Thompson and also re-signed defensive end Sam Williams to a one-year deal.

Along with those two moves, Dallas has agreed to deals with defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia, safety P.J. Locke, and quarterback Sam Howell.

Clearly, there are a lot of needs left for the Cowboys to focus on. Taking a swing on a player like Gyllenborg in the 2026 NFL Draft would be worth the risk. He is expected to be a late-round pick.
