Arizona Cardinals officially release QB Kyler Murray, team confirms

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Kyler Murray era in Arizona is officially over, as the team confirmed his release Tuesday afternoon.

“With today’s start of the new league year and transactions now official, we want to thank Kyler for everything he has done for this organization over the last seven years,” general manager Monti Ossenfort shared in a statement.

“We are extremely grateful for his contributions both on the field and off and we wish him nothing but the absolute best moving forward.”

Last week, the Heisman-winning quarterback posted a goodbye message on social media and apologized for not being the one to end the organization’s decades-long drought.

“I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us. I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best,” Murray said on social media.

Questions swirl about where Murray will end up next season. Reports have circulated about Murray possibly getting the starting job with the Minnesota Vikings, who have emerged as a top contender for the veteran quarterback.

As for the Cardinals quarterback room, two veteran quarterbacks will be fighting for the starting job. Gardner Minshew agreed to a 1-year, $8 million with the team, and Jacoby Brissett, who started last year as Murray was out with injuries, will return.

Scottsdale native Kedon Slovis sits at the third-string spot after being promoted to the active roster last year.

Murray was in the midst of a five-year, $230 million that was supposed to last through the 2028 season. The Cardinals still owe Murray $36.8 million guaranteed for the upcoming season.
