Green Bay Packers re-sign former 7th round pick for depth on the defensive line

One of the roster positions that the Green Bay Packers must devote special attention and resources to this off-season is defensive tackle. In fact, the entire defensive line as a whole could use some additions and upgrades. Micah Parsons is an All-Pro and one of the best players in the NFL, but the depth behind him is currently lacking.

This is, of course, normal for the off-season. NFL teams are re-tooling their rosters, and the Packers are no exception. That being said, it is not likely that Green Bay will address the position with big-name players in free agency. Instead, they will supplement their current talent with street free agents and 2026 NFL Draft picks.

However, they did bring back a familiar name already.

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed Jonathan Ford

Jonathan Ford is shown during the Green Bay Packers organized team activities (OTA) Tuesday, May 24, 2022 in Green Bay, Wis.

Last week, before the start of NFL free agency, the Packers traded defensive tackle Colby Wooden to the Indianapolis Colts for linebacker Zaire Franklin.

And while this trade helped solve Green Bay’s need at the linebacker position, it only made their depth on the defensive line even worse.

Because of this, the Packers have decided to re-sign former seventh round pick Jonathan Ford:

Ford was originally drafted by the Packers in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. However, he never appeared in a game for them that year, or the season after. He spent the first two years of his career on Green Bay’s practice squad.

After Ford was released by the Packers following 2024 training camp, he was picked up by the Chicago Bears. He made his NFL debut for them that season, but only appeared in four games for them, going back and forth between the gameday roster and the practice squad.

Last year, Ford played in eight games for the Bears before he was released in December. Shortly after, Green Bay picked him back up. He played one game for the Packers last year.
