Green Bay Packers release statement after Rashan Gary trade to Dallas Cowboys completed

The Green Bay Packers have been busy in the early days of NFL free agency. While today was the first day of the new league year, the legal tampering period began on Monday. This meant that teams and players could negotiate and unofficially agree to contract terms. However, they could not be made official until today.

One of the things that the Packers did in these early days of free agency was trade defensive end Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys. In return, Green Bay is receiving a fourth round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

The trade reunites Gary with his former Packers teammate Kenny Clark, who was traded to Dallas last year as part of the Micah Parsons deal.

Gary came under scrutiny by fans and analysts last year when he failed to record a single sack in the final 10 games of the season. He did rack up 7.5 in the first seven contests of the year, but disappeared down the stretch.

He finishes his tenure with the Packers with 46.5 career sacks, which ranks 11th in the history of the franchise.

Following the conclusion of the trade, which was made official on Wednesday afternoon, the Packers released the following statement:

“We want to thank Rashan for his commitment and hard work during his seven seasons with the Packers. His impact was felt both on the field and in the locker room and was key to the success of the six playoff teams that he was a part of in Green Bay.

“He worked incredibly hard to return from a significant knee injury sustained in 2022 and continued to be an impactful player for us once he was back on the field. We’re appreciative for all that he gave to our team, and we wish Rashan nothing but the best in the future.”

Gary was originally selected by the Packers in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. While he showed glimpses of brilliance, he never recorded a double-digit sack season. The most he had in any given year was 9.5 in 2021. He also had 9.0 in 2023, the year after he tore his ACL.
