Eagles Could Make Surprising Move to Help Jalen Hurts

During the 2025 NFL regular season, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had a staggering 132.7 passer rating when targeting tight end Dallas Goedert (via James Palmer). Goedert was a sure thing in an offense that was among the shakiest in the league under since-fired offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.

Entering free agency, which officially began alongside the new league year this afternoon, it was a foregone conclusion league-wide that the Goedert, 31, would leave the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

“While many of the Eagles headlines these days are about whether A.J. Brown will stay or go, one player I'm told that will definitely be moving on from Philly this offseason is Dallas Goedert,” NBC Sports’ Matthew Berry reported out of the 2026 NFL Combine.

Not so fast.

“Dallas Goedert was not listed as a free agent by the league,” The Athletic‘s Zach Berman reported on Wednesday evening. “His void date has been pushed back to Friday, a league source told The Athletic. This procedural move would give both sides a chance to work out a contract extension.”

Last season, Goedert’s 591 yards ranked third among Eagles receivers behind Devonta Smith (1,008) and A.J. Brown (1,003). However, Goedert led the team with 11 touchdowns.

After winning Super Bowl LIX MVP in February 2025, Hurts experienced a downturn last season. He posted better counting stats than he did during the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning run. He ended the 2025 regular season with 3,224 yards, 25 touchdowns, and six interceptions before the Eagles lost in the NFC Wild Card to the San Francisco 49ers. But his completion percentage dropped 3.9 points from 2024.

Hurts never looked comfortable in Patullo’s scheme, and concern over his hesitancy to rip the ball over the middle of the field reared its ugly head as the season wore on. Having Goedert back would be a welcome safety blanket for Hurts, who is welcoming Sean Mannion as his fifth different offensive coordinator since entering the NFL.
