Former Patriots Cornerback Reportedly Signs With Division Rival

Former New England Patriots cornerback Alex Austin is remaining in the AFC East.

New England opted not to tender Austin, making him a free agent. He was a key special teams contributor and did chip in on defense, but it wasn’t enough for New England to retain his services.

Now, with the new league year becoming official on Wednesday, Austin has reportedly signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Austin was selected in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. After failing to make the 53-man roster, the Houston Texans claimed him off waivers, but he was released in November, before New England signed him on Nov. 2.

The cornerback spent parts of three seasons with the Patriots and was an impact special teams contributor for the team. In his career, Austin has eight career PBUs and one interception.

After being non-tendered by the Patriots, Austin sent a heartfelt message to the fanbase.

“Forever love in New England! God’s Plan… looking forward to what he has next,” Austin wrote on X.

Austin will now get a chance to play against the Patriots twice in 2026 as a member of the Dolphins.
