Steelers ‘Content’ With Spencer Anderson As Starting Guard, Says Reporter

The Arizona Cardinals stole OG Isaac Seumalo in free agency from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Reportedly, the team isn’t looking for outside help to find their starting left guard. Per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in his weekly chat, the team is comfortable with 2023 seventh-round pick Spencer Anderson replacing Seumalo.

While Dulac previously reported the Steelers would look for a veteran guard in free agency, he said things have changed.

“I thought guard was next up on the list, based on what I was told at the combine. But they apparently are content now with Spencer Anderson in that role,” Dulac wrote.

Anderson began his career as a backup but started four games in 2024 with Seumalo injured. He also saw his role expand in 2025, being the tackle-eligible and an extra offensive lineman. In the last two seasons, Anderson has seen 894 offensive snaps. 437 of those came in 2024, and 457 came last season. Clearly, the Steelers have liked enough of what they’ve seen.

The team anticipated losing Seumalo in free agency. Although he was a reliable starter and leader for the offensive line, he dealt with injuries in the last two seasons. At 32 years old, the Steelers let him walk. They seem to believe Anderson is capable of filling his starting left guard role.

While they may be content with Anderson now, that doesn’t mean the team won’t add competition. They could draft a guard to provide some, but it doesn’t sound like the team will sign a veteran starter. The guard market has risen considerably in recent years, and, understandably, the Steelers might not want to pay top dollar for a veteran starter. Anderson has been steady in his role, but a full-time starter is a big leap in responsibility.

The Steelers are confident he can handle it. Given that he’ll be entering year four, it might be worth giving him a look to see if he can be a long-term option for the team. He’s set to be a free agent after 2026, and he’s certainly a cost-efficient option for the team. If Anderson proves he can be a capable starter this season, the Steelers may be able to have a long-term starter without investing any more money or significant draft capital into the guard position.
