Officially a free agent, quarterback Kyler Murray won’t rush into his first free agent decision. Though the Minnesota Vikings remain the favorite to sign him, Murray will cast a wide net and talk to several quarterback-needy teams. Murray’s agent Erik Burkhardt, via NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, says Murray will hold Zoom calls with “3-5” teams tonight and tomorrow before taking an official visit to Minnesota. On paper, Pittsburgh could be one of those teams speaking with Murray.
Just spoke to Kyler Murray’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, who tells me Murray plans to Zoom tonight and tomorrow with executives from 3-5 teams that potentially have a QB need in 2027 — a chance to reintroduce himself to people he hasn’t seen since the 2019 draft and get a jump start… https://t.co/MXbzXySD2R

Pelissero’s tweet doesn’t specify the Steelers or any individual teams beyond Minnesota. And he notes Murray is speaking with “2027 needy” teams in the event he plays well in 2026, hits the market again next offseason, and is suddenly in-demand. Arizona sports reporter John Gambadoro shared that possibility earlier Wednesday.
Kyler Murray will visit with the Minnesota Vikings tomorrow. A starting spot is a priority, and Minnesota does offer that and a deal could be done in the next 24 hours. But Murray and his camp are expected to explore several options as a backup in 2026 for teams that could need a…

Teams like the Los Angeles Rams could be in that mix. Still, if Murray’s list is upwards of five organizations, it’s hard not seeing Pittsburgh be part of that group. A team that doesn’t have a quarterback answer in 2026 or 2027. Aaron Rodgers has yet to decide his future and the Steelers have shown zero interest in any other quarterbacks, though reporting indicates the organization remains high on Will Howard.
With Arizona on the hook for his salary, Murray can and will sign for the minimum. Financially, it makes him no-risk and mirrors the calculation Pittsburgh made with Russell Wilson for the 2024 season.
Even if the Steelers speak with Murray, it doesn’t mean a deal is imminent. Pittsburgh has nothing to lose by making their pitch and getting to know Murray, a prospect way out of the team’s range during the 2019 draft. And Murray should hear the vision from every team, especially one lead by a quarterback-friendly head coach in Mike McCarthy.
Insiders put high odds of Murray landing in Minnesota. The chance to play under Kevin O’Connell and compete with J.J. McCarthy for the starting job is attractive. But until a deal is signed, Murray could end up anywhere, and the Steelers might make their case over the next couple hours.
