Steelers get big news on signing Calvin Austin in free agency

The fact that Calvin Austin is even a free agent has flown under the radar a bit for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

And now after the trade for Michael Pittman to join DK Metcalf, Austin feels like a bit of an afterthought.

But really, he's got the type of speedy game that makes perfect sense as a WR3 rather than as a WR2, and Pittsburgh could still be after him.

Local radio host Jeff Hathhorn reports that Austin "could still re-sign" with the Steelers.

That news came on Wednesday night, and it would be a positive development for the Steelers if they could bring Austin back on a relatively cheap contract.

He'll turn 27 on March 24, and the 5-foot-9, 162-pound receiver has shown he can contribute in the NFL even at his size.

He was a fourth-round pick by the Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Memphis.

In his rookie season, Austin had just 17 grabs for 180 yards and a touchdowns.

He had his best season in 2024, going for 36 catches, 548 yards and four touchdowns, with a rate of 15.2 yards per catch.

He didn't get as many downfield chances with Aaron Rodgers and finished at 12.0 yards per catch on 31 grabs for 372 yards and three TDs.

Still, Austin is a known commodity in Pittsburgh, and especially if Rodgers comes back, that established chemistry could be useful.
