Jamie Carragher has been discussing what is stopping Chelsea reaching the next level.
Jamie Carragher has been discussing Chelsea’s struggles in the Champions League after they were thrashed 5-2 by PSG in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie. The Blues were once level at 2-2 but saw the game get away from them after a number of mistakes.
Filip Jorgensen conceded a goal after a poor pass was intercepted, and a PSG stunner followed after a weak passage of play that saw Reece James shrugged off the ball far too easily.
On the whole, Chelsea battled well, but key mistakes in key moments saw them punished by one of the best teams in the world and the current Champions League holders.
It leaves Chelsea with a three-goal deficit going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge - a mountain to climb indeed. This season, Chelsea have looked very good in spells, but they have come apart against the very best teams, and going into the summer, the conversations will be about how this team can equip themselves to take the next step.
According to Carragher, the answers are obvious after the PSG defeat. “Chelsea didn’t deserve to lose 5-2, but they’ve only got themselves to blame,” he told CBS Sports.
“You know what, I’ve been critical of Chelsea for a long time and we’ve had debates, but I’m being deadly serious. They can’t go any further until they sort the goalkeeper situation out.
“The new ownership have come in and spent billions and right now, looking at the team, they’ve got some great players in the team.
“And I think in these early stages that Rosenior has been brilliant. I thought Rosenior tonight, as a manager, and how he set the team up caused PSG real problems. They didn’t deserve to lose, as in the way the game was set up and how they played.
“But big mistakes cost them, at centre-back and goalkeeper. And that has been an issue and will continue to be an issue for any Chelsea manager going forward when they’re trying to win the Premier League and the Champions League.”
