Aston Villa will be aiming to go a step closer to European glory this season as it takes on Lille in its first knockout game in the Europa League.

Having avoided the play-off round last month after finishing second during the league phase, Unai Emery's side will head to France for the first leg of its last-16 tie, where it will be the favorite to go through, and among the frontrunners to go all the way to the final in Istanbul in May.

Villa though aren't in the best form heading into the tie, with no wins in their last four games in all competitions as qualification for next season's Champions League looks in more doubt, placing even more importance on its Europa League run this season.

Team news

The hosts have a number of players missing through injury for today’s game, including Ethan Mbappe, the brother, of course, of Real Madrid star Kylian.

As well as the 19-year-old midfielder, Lille is also without Marc-Aurele Caillard, Osame Sahraoui, Hamza Igamane and Ousmane Toure.

As for Villa, John McGinn is not expected to return, with Youri Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara and Andres Garcia also out injured.

Matty Cash and Harvey Elliott are doubts, although the latter has rarely been in favor with Emery since making the move on loan from Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Ross Barkley is ineligible, having been left off the Europa League squad list.
