Liverpool are still being linked with centre-halves for a summer move but one name appears to be off the shortlist.

There are football transfers that make sense, then there are others that raise an eyebrow or two when stories break.

When Micky van de Ven was linked with Liverpool, it seemed like an obvious one. The 24-year old has plenty of experience in the Premier League and has played alongside Virgil van Dijk at international level. He also has the sort of skillset that makes him well-equipped to defend open spaces created by opposition teams sitting deep with strikers regularly within touching distance of their own box, much to Arne Slot’s frustration.

Micky van de Ven to Liverpool red flags

With every passing week though, there are more and more red flags surrounding Van de Ven with his performance against Atletico Madrid being the latest. He looked panicked, under pressure and far from the stable influence that he should have been playing with a keeper who had made mistakes on his debut. The fact is, he was lucky himself not to have been hooked early doors given some of the errors he had been guilty of.

Van de Ven might well want to make the move to Anfield to further his career, however, there are other, more consistent options available to Liverpool and who wouldn’t cost in the region of £100m. For that sort of fee, Richard Hughes would be wanting a player with a clean bill of health, a good disciplinary record and an assured mental fortitude, something that the Dutchman can’t in all honesty claim to have.

Liverpool make Van de Ven decision

Whether it has been recent performances or not, respected journalist Dominic King has revealed that Liverpool are moving on from the Tottenham centre-back in the summer transfer window, even though reports suggest that the player himself would be keen to be united with his international teammate.

King said on talkSPORT: “From what I’ve heard, I don’t believe they’re in for him. I would never say anything definitively about a football transfer because things can change.

“I would believe that he would want to come to Liverpool. That’s from what I’ve heard, but I’m not sure that the feeling is totally mutual at this moment in time.”

If Liverpool are moving on from Van de Ven, it isn’t a surprise, for a number of reasons. In Cristian Romero and Van de Ven, Spurs have two experienced centre-halves and yet they find themselves in a relegation battle, something there isn’t right and in adversity, neither have acquitted themselves particularly well.
