Brad Stevens stepped into the role of the Boston Celtics‘ President of Basketball Operations in June 2021, following a successful spell as head coach.
Since moving into the front office, Stevens has earned praise for his ability to unearth hidden gems, while also finding success in the trade market and the NBA draft. Those successes were recognized in 2024, when Stevens was named the NBA’s executive of the year.
In a conversation with Heavy on Sports, via the American comparison website Casino Guru, which guides players to reputable online casinos, former Celtics wing and player development coach Evan Turner explained why Stevens has been so successful since moving into the front office.
“ Brad’s very intentional,” Turner said. “He’s not one of those guys who like to fly by the seat of their pants. So it’s not like, ‘hey, I saw this guy one time. I’m going off my gut instinct.’ Brad, he’s a numbers guy. He looks up numbers, looks up guys’ backgrounds, but he’s also a killer himself. So, he loves guys who compete. And I think he gets a lot out of how guys approach the game, how well they work, and how badly they compete.”
Turner continued.
“ I think one thing that Brad always preaches is just like, ‘hey, you need guys that are mentally strong and will go through the wall (for you). Because that’s who they are. And, I think with Brad you see that in everything he does.”
Celtics’ Brad Stevens Built Another Contender
Following Jayson Tatum’s Achilles tendon injury in the Eastern Conference semifinals, Brad Stevens decided to make some changes to the Celtics roster. He parted ways with Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday via trade. Stevens also allowed Luke Kornet and Al Horford to leave in free agency.
In turn, Stevens added Luka Garza, Josh Minott and rookie Hugo Gonzalez to the main roster. And while Minott is no longer with the team, all three young and unproven additions rose to the challenge of being part of Boston’s retooling efforts.
Stevens’ efforts have paid off. Not only is Boston below the luxury tax, but they’re also second in the Eastern Conference and one of the favorites to come out of the East during the postseason.
Celtics’ Brad Stevens Still Has Work To Do
Despite the Celtics’ unexpected success this season, Stevens still has more work to do in terms of rounding out the roster. Nikola Vucevic was a shrewd addition at the trade deadline, but at 35 years old, he isn’t the long-term answer to the Celtics’ center position.
Furthermore, Stevens may want to tweak the current roster construction, as there is limited depth at the guard position and an abundance of two-way wings, some of whom are struggling for minutes.
Another summer of building around the current core should position Boston for a lengthy run near the top of the East. Assuming Tatum returns to an All-NBA level at some point in the next year, the Celtics will be a serious threat for the next five or more years.
