Mikel Arteta reportedly fumes at Arsenal’s set-piece defending against Bayer Leverkusen. The frustration was clear long after the final whistle. The Gunners left Germany with a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg.
Furious Reaction From Mikel Arteta After Leverkusen Draw
For most of the season, Arsenal have looked like the kings of set pieces in Europe. Under Mikel Arteta, their dead ball tactics have brought goals and constant pressure. However, it was Bayer Leverkusen who changed the script at the BayArena in their UCL RO16 tie.
Just seconds after the restart Alejandro Grimaldo took a dangerous corner toward the near pack. Robert Andrich attacked the ball with perfect timing and powered a header past David Raya.
The goal stunned the Gunners because it arrived straight after another warning sign. Moments earlier Raya had already produced a brilliant save to deny Martin Terrier from close range. That chance came from a kick-off routine that Leverkusen had used in recent matches.
As per reports, Arteta revealed that his staff had shown the players those patterns during the break. But, still the reaction on the pitch was slow. Markers lost their man for a split second and Andrich punished it instantly.
For a team that prides itself on detail and discipline, the mistake hurts badly. The Premier League leaders normally defend corners with focus and strong body positions. This time the shape disappeared and Leverkusen took that opportunity with both hands. Arteta’s frustration was obvious to everyone there inside the stadium.
Huge Warning From The Gunner’s Boss
Arsenal eventually recovered through a calm penalty from Kai Havertz against his former club. The equaliser settled the game but it did not cool the manager. Speaking after the match Arteta made it clear the goal was avoidable.
He said: “We discussed that at half-time and we expected it to start very fast, especially because we knew certain routines that they have on kick-off, because they had three on the weekend.”
The Spaniard explained that his analysts had clipped those videos from Bayer Leverkusen’s recent league match. The message in the dressing room was to stay sharp from the whistle and track every runner. Instead, the first seconds of the half turned chaotic. A free header forced the keeper into action and the corner followed instantly.
Arteta added: “Instead we get caught, we’re not ready enough, we concede a chance on the header, and that’s when we concede the goal. When you give that hope and advantage to the opponent, at that level, they’re going to take it, and then we had to really dig in because emotionally it becomes a very different challenge.”
His words carried more disappointment than anger. He knows knockout football punishes even the smallest errors.
A Harsh Lesson Before Second Leg
The north London side will travel back home knowing the tie remains balanced. Away goals no longer decide UCL ties but momentum still matters. The Gunners dominated large parts of the game with possession and pressing. But, that single set piece mistake changed the atmosphere inside the BayArena.
Leverkusen have built a name for keeping sharp structure this season. Their Bundesliga campaign has been powered by clever routines and fearless attacking movement.
For Arsenal, the irony was very hard to ignore. They have spent two years turning their side into one of the most dangerous set piece teams in England. The manager hinted that the error might even help improve the squad before the return leg. Training in the coming days will almost likely focus on that routine as well. Arsenal fans will hope the lesson arrives at the perfect moment.
