Following Liverpool FC’s disappointing defeat to Galatasaray S.K., one selection decision from head coach Arne Slot has left many supporters scratching their heads — the continued lack of trust in young winger Rio Ngumoha.
After delivering a man of the match performance in Liverpool’s FA Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. last Friday, many expected Ngumoha to play some role in the Champions League clash in Istanbul.
Instead, the youngster once again watched most of the game from the bench.
A Surprising Starting Choice
Slot’s team selection raised eyebrows before the match had even kicked off.
Florian Wirtz was given a starting role on the left side of Liverpool’s attack despite only recently returning from injury. It quickly became clear that he wasn’t quite up to full sharpness, struggling to influence the game as Liverpool laboured in a difficult atmosphere.
Interestingly, Slot also chose not to start Cody Gakpo on the left, which initially suggested that Ngumoha might get an opportunity later in the game.
The Substitution That Raised Eyebrows
With Liverpool trailing 1–0 and needing a goal, the natural expectation was that Slot would turn to the fearless young winger who had impressed so much days earlier.
Instead, when Wirtz was substituted, Slot opted to bring on Gakpo — leaving Ngumoha once again watching from the sidelines.
For many fans, the decision felt like another clear sign that the manager does not yet fully trust the teenager, despite his recent performances.
Fearless Against Wolves
What made the situation even more frustrating for supporters was Ngumoha’s display against Wolves.
The young winger was repeatedly targeted by defenders, receiving some heavy challenges throughout the match. Yet rather than being intimidated, he responded by demanding the ball even more, taking on defenders and continuing to attack whenever the opportunity arose.
That kind of bravery and direct attacking play is exactly what Liverpool have often lacked in recent weeks.
A Missed Opportunity?
Of course, young players must be introduced carefully and protected from too much pressure.
But with Liverpool chasing the game and struggling to create clear chances, Ngumoha’s pace, directness and confidence might have offered something different.
Instead, he remained unused as Liverpool slipped to defeat.
For supporters eager to see exciting young talent given a chance, it felt like another moment where Slot missed an opportunity to reward performance with opportunity.
