Liverpool may be the "destination" for "direct" £95m World Cup ace this summer - journalist

Liverpool could reportedly still be the “destination” for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon this summer, but Arsenal are providing stern competition.

Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo’s struggles this season have heighened the need for the Reds to add quality to their attacking in wide areas.

As it stands, teenager Rio Ngumoha is the only other natural choice in that area, with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz more suited to other roles, despite being able to play there.

Gordon has been linked with Liverpool plenty in recent years, and speaking to Football Insider, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness talked up him joining the Reds, even though Arsenal are also strongly in the mix:

“Well, certainly, he was nailed on to go to Liverpool just a few months ago, and then it’s now switched to Arsenal. I think that Liverpool may still be the destination for him, I think, given he is from the area. I still think there’s an attraction for him to come down there.

“I think Liverpool, I don’t know, it depends on the Isak injury as well. We’ve got to see how their forward line stacks up. But I do think he’s more unhappy at Newcastle.”

Would Anthony Gordon be a wide upgrade for Liverpool?

Gordon has matured into an impressive player for both Newcastle and England, with Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel hailing his quality as a player ahead of him potentially starting at the 2026 World Cup:

“I think it’s a very good performance. I think Anthony deserved to stay in the team. He is a direct player, I think this is his biggest strength, to go direct and go again and again. To have this repetition in his intensity. He just collects high intensity runs, he collects metres in sprints and this is so, so good.”

There is plenty to like about the 24-year-old, in terms of his pace and directness on the left wing, and he would be an upgrade on the out-of-sorts Gakpo, who has flattered to deceive all season long.

The fact that it would annoy Everton fans would be the added icing on the cake!

Gordon will cost a lot of money, though – as much as £95m mooted – which is one downside, but if Liverpool can get him for cheaper, he could be a real asset who repays the funds spent on him over time.
