Mikel Arteta’s side already have one of the strongest defensive units in Europe. But, the club seems ready to add more depth again. New reports suggest Arsenal have begun talks to sign highly rated RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba. He is a player many clubs across Europe are watching closely.
Arsenal Begin Bold Talks For Castello Lukeba
Arsenal’s latest transfer news shows the club is still pushing to improve. Now, the player catching their eye is Castello Lukeba. The talented centre back is currently playing for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
As per reports, Gunners’ sporting director Andrea Berta has already begun talks over a possible deal. The club started looking for the move after sending scouts to watch the defender earlier this year.
Lukeba has built a strong name in Germany since joining Leipzig from Lyon in 2023. At just 23, he has already become one of the most reliable defenders in the league. His game has made him stand out in a league known for fast attacking football.
Leipzig are reportedly valuing the defender between €60m and €70m. The German club has built a name for developing young stars before selling them for huge profits. Players such as Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku and Dani Olmo all moved on for huge fees.
The north London side believe the Frenchman could be the next name on that list. Early talks have reportedly taken place with the player’s camp. This comes as the club makes a call on whether a summer deal is possible.
Arteta’s Defensive Vision Creates Transfer Debate
Arsenal tracking another centre back might look surprising at this point. Head coach Mikel Arteta already has one of the most solid defensive pairs in the Premier League. However, the English side is planning ahead rather than reacting late. They want depth and competition in every position if they are going to fight for big titles consistently.
Lukeba fits that long term plans of the Gunners. He has a great left foot and he can play out from the back as well. In addition, he is still young enough to improve further. Some scouts even believe his playing style could suit the PL better than the Bundesliga. That is because of his physical strength and positioning.
Arteta’s side played a huge number of games last season across domestic and European competitions. The Spaniard wants multiple defenders capable of stepping in for the team.
There is also uncertainty around how the defence could look next season. The club is very likely to sign Piero Hincapie permanently after his loan spell. That said, it would add another option on the left side of defence. Still, the club still believes Lukeba could raise the overall quality of the squad.
Competition for the French defender may also push Arsenal to act quickly. Clubs such as Real Madrid have reportedly keeping tabs on his progress as well. This means that the Gunners cannot afford to wait too long before making their move.
Summer Exit Agreed As Transfer Plans Take Shape
While Arsenal explore new arrivals, there could also be movement in the opposite direction. Reports claim goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has grown frustrated with his limited role at the club.
Meanwhile, David Raya has firmly established as the first choice goalkeeper. So, Kepa has reportedly asked for permission to leave in search of regular playing time. The situation could open space within the squad and possibly help the team balance their finances during the summer window.
That potential exit may not directly fund the Lukeba move. But, it shows how the club is quietly reshaping parts of the squad. If everything works, Arsenal could soon secure one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe.
