'Always': Hugo Ekitike shares what he keeps telling Florian Wirtz about their partnership at Liverpool

Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz have formed a brilliant partnership at Liverpool this season, combining for the most goals of any duo.

Ekitike has praised Wirtz heavily already this season, saying that the German is a ‘beautiful player to watch’.

Now, the Frenchman has promised to make ‘great things’ happen as long as he and the former Bayer Leverkusen man continue to link up.

If no, where will he be instead?

Hugo Ekitike promises ‘great things’ from Florian Wirtz partnership

Speaking to TNT Sports about their partnership, he said: “I think that he’s [Wirtz] a player I like to play with the most.

“I like the other players as well, but it’s just like, obviously, you know, when you play striker and that you have a ten that understands football so much and that actually wants to play the same football as you, it makes things easy.

“I always told him that if we play together, we’re going to make great things and like if he give me the ball, I give it him back and things will happen.

“I enjoy so much playing with him and I know that it’s the kind of player that can give you like so many assists during a season. So that’s good to have a player like this on your side that can make you like actually shine.”

So far, Ekitike is making good on that promise as the duo have already linked up for six goals in all competitions this season, the most of any Liverpool players.

If the pair combined once more in 2025/26, they will surpass Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard for the most joint-goal participations from two Reds players aged 23 or under in a single campaign.

The former England internationals also managed six back in the 2002/03 campaign.

What Florian Wirtz has said about playing with Hugo Ekitike

Over the years, we have seen a number of Liverpool players form great relationships.

Mohamed Salah’s connections with the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Andy Robertson helped the Reds become one of the most dominant sides in England.

But the ex-Eintracht Frankfurt forward and Wirtz have taken up that mantle as Liverpool’s biggest attacking threat, and it appears both players share a great respect for one another, with the latter already explaining why he likes playing with Ekitike.

Speaking in February, he said: “Yeah, I said it often already that it’s really a joy to play with him. We have so many good players in the team. You can see that he’s one of the guys you like to watch.

“Even for me, I like to see him on the pitch and in training. It’s just fun to combine with him, he gives me a lot of assists already and I just try to help him also to achieve his goals.

“He’s a good friend of mine. We are very close. So yeah, it’s just fun to play with him.”

The only player Ekitike has previously had anywhere close to as good a connection with is Omar Marmoush, who he also combined with on six occasions (36 games vs 31 with Wirtz so far).
