Tony Dungy, a Pro Football Hall of Fame 2016 class inductee and Super Bowl XIII-winning head coach, has been dropped from NBC’s Football Night in America broadcasting team. The news hit the football world on Thursday morning.

Following word that Tony Dungy would not be part of the Football Night in America team next season, the former Colts and Buccaneers head coach took to social media to break his silence and share his disappointment.

Tony Dungy On Being Cut From ‘Football Night In America’ Team: ‘Disappointing’

After spending 13 prolific seasons as a head coach in the NFL, leading the Colts to a Super Bowl victory, and implementing the infamous ‘Tampa 2’ defensive scheme, Tony Dungy has had a successful career in broadcasting until now. He joined Rodney Harrison and Jac Collinsworth as on-site personalities for NBC’s FNIA which averaged 8.8 million viewers in the 2025 NFL season.

After receiving word from NBC that he had been cut from the team, Tony Dungy took to X (née Twitter) to express his disappointment. The head coach shared the following message:

Prior to being dropped by NBC, Dungy had appeared on Football Night in America for 17 years, since 2009. He was a fixture of the weekly broadcast.

It remains to be seen if NBC will replace Dungy’s role with new talent, if they will fold the position into the broadcast by utilizing existing talent, or what happens next. And neither Dungy nor NBC has commented thus far on why he was dropped from the broadcast, if it was related to compensation or simply a changing of the guard.

News of this shakeup had been percolating for a few weeks. Drew Lerner of Awful Announcing wrote back on February 26th about the potential that Tony Dungy was unlikely to return. That same report included news that Rodney Harrison was also unlikely to return while Jac Collinsworth’s future was uncertain.
