Cody Gakpo could be used in a shock swap deal in the summer, if new transfer reports involving Liverpool are to be believed.
Gakpo has found his Anfield career to date largely up-and-down, with the Dutchman able to boast a respectable 49 goals from 166 Liverpool appearances since sealing a switch from PSV Eindhoven back in 2022.
Yet, this season – in particular – the 26-year-old attacker has been a regular scapegoat on Merseyside when Arne Slot’s men have offered up limp performances up top.
Cody Gakpo: 2025/26 Performance Weaknesses:
Metric/Area of Weakness Current season stat
Finishing efficiency 14 shots on target from 64 shots
Predictability factor 3 blocked shots per match
Big chance conversion 5 big chances missed
Crossing accuracy 13.4% average
Offensive output 6 goals in 27 Premier League matches
One-on-one success 55.3% dribble success
His recent lacklustre numbers don’t help his case, either, with Gakpo only able to tally up a weak two Premier League strikes across 2026 so far.
Therefore, it isn’t the greatest shock to see that transfer reports suggest Liverpool might well look to move on their former £37m buy this approaching summer, as attacking reinforcements are considered.
The shock swap deal Liverpool considering
As per a new report from TeamTALK, Liverpool could well be considering offloading their hot-and-cold Dutchman to try and tempt Bayern Munich superstar Michael Olise back to England.
Formerly on the books of Crystal Palace, Olise has ripped up the Bundesliga ever since ditching Selhurst Park for a chance at glory with Vincent Kompany’s men, with a staggering ten goals and 18 assists next to his name this season, from only 23 league appearances.
He would be a perfect addition to a Liverpool attack that has blown hot and cold this season, with Gakpo a guilty culprit of far too many wasteful performances.
However, the report states that the Reds have already had a significant £130m offer waved away for the sparkling Englishman’s services.
The German titans would surely need some major persuading to even think about parting ways with their dynamic winger, but Liverpool believes Gakpo might well hold the key in trying to smooth over a deal.
Indeed, it’s stated that offering up the inconsistent number 18 could be another avenue that is explored as Liverpool tries to speed up a statement move.
Surely, Bayern would laugh off this advance, as well, as the Dutchman has been on the receiving end of a lot of harsh criticism this season from Liverpool fans and neutral pundits alike.
Would Bayern accept this swap deal?
However, his 174 goal contributions for both PSV and the Reds should not be sniffed at, with Gakpo’s major trophy honours of a Premier League, an Eredivisie title, and an EFL Cup, across his well-travelled career so far, perhaps piquing Bayern’s interest, who are serial winners, themselves, in Germany.
Moreover, Kompany and Co. have already stuck gold shopping at Anfield in recent times, in the form of Luis Diaz, with Liverpool perhaps regretting another sale to Bavaria, if Gakpo was to hit Diaz’s heights in his new location.
To add context, the Colombian has a mighty 20 goals and 16 assists next to his name in Germany, as Slot’s men continue to rue discarding the 29-year-old so rashly last summer.
This has all the makings of being a fascinating transfer saga to watch this coming summer, as Liverpool prepares to spend big again.
