Reds Fans told Liverpool to sign£70M Dutchman from Premier League rivals

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has sparked fresh transfer speculation by claiming Liverpool could attempt to sign Micky van de Ven on the cheap this summer if Tottenham Hotspur suffer the shock of relegation.

Sherwood made the remarks during a recent podcast appearance, suggesting the Dutch defender would be an ideal long-term successor to LIVERPOOL captain Virgil van Dijk. With Van Dijk entering the latter stages of his career, Sherwood believes Van de Ven has the attributes needed to fill the role at Anfield.

The speculation comes at a turbulent time for Tottenham, who have been dragged into a relegation battle following a disastrous run of results in the Premier League. Spurs sit precariously just above the drop zone after a series of defeats under interim boss Igor Tudor, intensifying fears of an unthinkable drop to the Championship.

Tottenham’s defensive struggles have also put the spotlight on Van de Ven, who has endured a difficult spell. The 24-year-old was sent off in a recent defeat to Crystal Palace that deepened the club’s crisis and will miss key fixtures through suspension.

Sherwood suggested Tottenham’s league position could dramatically affect the player’s market value. Relegation would likely force Spurs into difficult financial decisions and could make some of their top assets available at reduced fees.

Speaking about the potential transfer to BOYLE Sports, Sherwood said: “I think he’s the obvious choice for LIVERPOOL this summer on that left centre-back position. There aren’t many of those about.

‘There is one other, Jarrad Branthwaite, but there’s no way he’s joining from Everton. So I think it opens up the door there for Micky to become a Liverpool player. I think he’d do really well for them, I really do.”

He continued his appraisal of the 23-year-old, noting that he could reach another level by playing alongside his fellow countryman. “He’s got all the attributes to become a top player, but he needs to play with someone like Virgil van Dijk,” Sherwood added.

“I think that proven, experienced players by his side would make him feel more comfortable and improve his leadership skills, because I don’t think he’s the leader everyone thinks he is just yet. It’s a learning curve for Micky, and he could really benefit from the experience of winners around him, but I still think he’d be a good fit for Liverpool.”

Despite those setbacks, the Netherlands international remains highly rated across the Premier League thanks to his recovery speed and ball-playing ability. LIVERPOOL, under head coach Arne Slot, have previously been linked with centre-backs capable of fitting their high defensive line, and Van de Ven’s profile has kept him on the radar of several top clubs.

For now, Tottenham’s priority remains survival. With crucial matches looming in the run-in, the club faces a fight to avoid relegation — a scenario that could trigger a summer exodus and reshape the transfer market around one of North London’s most promising defenders.
