An interesting option to be the Kansas City Chiefs‘ early-season starting quarterback if Patrick Mahomes is not fully recovered from his ACL tear just fell in the team’s lap.
Last season was a disaster for the Chiefs. For the first time since Andy Reid became head coach over a decade ago, the team finished a season with a record below .500. However, there was also salt thrown in the wound late in the campaign.
During a December game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the face of the Chiefs franchise — Patrick Mahomes — tore his ACL and LCL. While Mahomes is a great athlete and has enough time to be ready to suit up in Week 1, the organization should not rush their most important player back to the field unless he is 1,000% ready.
That is why the Chiefs will probably look at bringing in a veteran QB that could start a few games early next season. However, it does not make much sense for them to get involved in the market for players like Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garappolo or Aaron Rodgers. They need a true-blue backup that can win a couple of games.

Well, a strong option just became available. On Thursday morning, the Baltimore Ravens announced that they have released eight-year veteran Cooper Rush. The 32-year-old is a traditional backup QB who owns a solid 9-7 record as a starter during stints with the Dallas Cowboys and Ravens.
When he works with good talent, Rush has shown he can make an impact from under center and has a couple of 300-plus yards games along with some big wins on his resume. If he had to start for the Chiefs early in the season, he could manage the offense and help get the team some wins. But when Mahomes returns, Kansas City will then have one of the better backup signal-callers in the game.
