Broncos Targeting National Champion in Upcoming NFL Draft

With NFL free agency in full swing, teams are making decisions about whether to spend on certain positions or to wait and take their chances drafting young talent in the NFL Draft.

The Denver Broncos have made their stance fairly clear, so far. The reigning AFC West champions have not signed anyone from another team yet, instead focusing on bringing back important pieces like running back J.K. Dobbins and linebackers Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad.

However, one thing the Broncos could really use this offseason is another weapon for star quarterback Bo Nix. As top wideout Courtland Sutton enters his age-31 season, the Broncos lack a downfield receiver, whether it be as a speedster or a jump-ball contender.

The team hoped receiver Troy Franklin could be a speedy separator for the offense, especially given his connection with Nix at Oregon, but that hasn't panned out as planned.

Now, the Broncos are turning their attention to April's NFL Draft. According to The Denver Post's Luca Evans, the Broncos are bringing Indiana receiver Omar Cooper Jr. in for a top-30 visit on Friday in preparation for the draft.

Cooper Jr. is a highly coveted slot receiver in this draft and played a central role in Indiana's national championship run last season.

Working with Heisman Trophy winner and projected first-overall pick quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Cooper Jr. made 69 catches for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns, tied for the third-most in college football last season. He also had one rushing touchdown.

The Broncos lacked a big contributor in yards after the catch last season, as no receiver topped 300 yards in that category last season. The 6-foot receiver might not have the size to contend with the jump balls downfield, but his speed and ability to burn teams from the slot could fit perfectly in the Broncos' offense.

Cooper Jr. could be available when the Broncos are on the clock with the No. 30 pick in the draft.
