Joe Gomez has told Arne Slot he just wants to help the team, regardless of where he plays for Liverpool.

The 28-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent times, and most recently missed a few weeks with a hip injury, which came about when he collided with Alisson during a loss to Bournemouth at the end of January.

Since making his return in a 1-0 win away to Sunderland last month, Gomez has figured in each of Liverpool's seven games.

Despite being a center-back by trade, most of those appearances have come as a right-back, amid injury issues that have plagued Liverpool in that area of the field throughout the campaign.

Gomez does not mind, though, as long as he can play his part.

"I just want to help the team wherever that will be, whether it's in the centre or at full-back," Gomez said.

"For me it's about getting rhythm and momentum. I want to play but as cliched as it sounds, it's always about what's best for the team.

"(The injury against Bournemouth) was a knock on my hip. It was from the impact. If it had been anyone other than Ali (Alisson) I probably would have been okay! It was frustrating for me but you face some tough luck at times and you have to deal with it."

Gomez's most recent outing came away to Galatasaray in midweek, when the Reds suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League meeting.

Mario Lemina scored the only goal of an incident-packed game, but qualification for the last eight is still well within the team's reach, and Gomez is hopeful of achieving that, along with several other goals that the team has before the end of the season. "We want to get Champions League football for next season," he said. "We know how big that is for the club. The FA Cup is still there to fight for. We have to beat big teams if we're going to win that. "And we've still got the Champions League. We know how important this period is. The new lads understand the stakes as well. We have to stay together as a team and fight until the end. "This is a crunch period. We're coming to the business end of the season and we'll do everything we can to make something out of it. "We've under-performed at times. We're not where we want to be in the Premier League but we still have the chance to put things right."
