Reliable journalist David Ornstein believes Liverpool are likely to sign a new wide attacking player when the summer transfer window arrives.
The Reds may have spent big on the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz last year, among others, but this summer again looks like an important window for them.
Mohamed Salah is a shadow of the world-class player he used to be, while the likes of Ibrahima Konate, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo have also been well below their best.
Reinforcements are required across various positions, and while centre-back may take precedence, at least one new winger has to be looked at.
Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast [via Empire of the Kop], the dependable Ornstein said he thinks that will be the case when this season reaches its conclusion:
“I expect a wide attacker to be signed. They were in for Semenyo previously; he didn’t come to them, but I think that’s what they’re in the market for.”
Liverpool must sign a versatile new winger this summer
Liverpool have looked horribly short on the wing all season long, with Salah and Gakpo providing nowhere near enough quality and pace, scoring only 11 Premier League goals between them.
Rio Ngumoha has been the only spark in that position, but he is still only 17 years of age and too much cannot be expected of him yet.
A host of wingers have been linked with Liverpool, and if they don’t sign a player on either flank, they need to bring in someone versatile enough to excel on both the right and left-hand side.
Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon is one option, playing predominantly on the left, while Bayern Munich star Michael Olise could be the perfect successor to Salah on the right.
The Frenchman is enjoying a fantastic season for Bayern, scoring 13 goals and registering 21 assists in the Bundesliga and Champions League combined, and he could light up Anfield with his attacking magic.
It remains to be seen who Liverpool will move for, but if a sufficient amount of quality isn’t added, it will only be detrimental to their hopes of returning to their best form next season.
