Jamie Carragher has urged Chelsea to overhaul their goalkeeping department this summer following the club’s heavy 5–2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, insisting the Blues will struggle to compete for major honours unless they find a reliable No.1.
The former Liverpool defender, speaking in his role as a television pundit, was critical of Chelsea’s current options between the posts after another turbulent night for the west London side in Europe. PSG exposed defensive frailties throughout the match, but Carragher believes the deeper issue lies in the lack of stability and authority from CHELSEA’s goalkeepers.
Both Filip Jorgensen and Robert Sanchez have featured during the season, yet neither has fully convinced observers that they are capable of anchoring a team with ambitions of competing at the highest level.
Carragher argued that Chelsea’s recruitment strategy over the past few years has focused heavily on young players with long-term potential, but suggested the club may have overlooked the importance of experience and reliability in key positions — particularly in goal
He said: ‘CHELSEA didn’t deserve to lose 5-2 but they’ve only got themselves to blame for that. I’ve been critical of Chelsea for a long time, but I’m being deadly serious, they can’t go any further until they sort the goalkeeping issue out. I’ve been saying this consistently.
‘The new ownership have come in and spent absolute billions and right now they’ve got some great players in the team and I think in these early stages Liam Rosenior has been brilliant, I thought Rosenior as a manager tonight, looking at how he set the team up, caused PSG real problems, they didn’t deserve to lose as in the way the game was set up and how they played.
‘But big mistakes cost them at centre-back and goalkeeper and that has been an issue and will continue to be an issue for any Chelsea manager going forward when they’re trying to win the Premier League and Champions League because they’re a million miles off it.
‘That’s why they lost tonight, not because they haven’t got great attacking players or the manager knows what he’s doing, tactically they were fantastic tonight. They were let down by a mistake from the goalkeeper at 2-2 and then the game just completely unravelled and now all of a sudden it looks like they’ve got no chance of going through.’
Carragher suggested the summer transfer window represents an opportunity for Chelsea’s recruitment team to address the issue decisively. Rather than continuing with a rotation system or hoping one of their current options develops into a long-term solution, he believes the club should prioritise signing a proven goalkeeper capable of commanding the penalty area and organising the defence.
Goalkeeping stability has often been a hallmark of successful CHELSEA sides in the past, with the club historically relying on strong figures between the posts during their most successful periods.
Carragher believes restoring that sense of security should be a priority as the club continues its rebuild under its current ownership.
