Chelsea’s search for defensive stability could take them in an unexpected direction this summer. Reports now suggest the club are monitoring Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, less than a year after the Italian completed his move from Bologna to north London.

Calafiori arrived at the Emirates in 2024 for around £42 million and quickly became part of Mikel Arteta’s defensive rotation. Yet despite regular involvement, questions about his best position continue to follow him. That uncertainty has opened the door for potential interest elsewhere.

Chelsea showed interest in Calafiori before his move to Arsenal, and their long standing admiration for the defender now seems to have resurfaced.

Chelsea could offer Calafiori a different role

Calafiori’s preferred position has become one key reason behind Chelsea’s renewed interest. While Arsenal have often deployed him as a left back, the 23 year old reportedly sees himself primarily as a central defender. Journalist Simon Phillips recently explained on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that Calafiori would welcome more opportunities in the middle of the defence.

That detail has reportedly caught Chelsea’s attention as they continue assessing their options for the upcoming window. As per the reports, the club believe the defender could add depth and balance to their squad while also offering versatility across the back line in both football competitions and the Premier League. At Arsenal, the path to a regular centre back role is complicated.

William Saliba and Gabriel have developed into one of the most reliable defensive partnerships in England, making it extremely difficult for any challenger to break into the starting lineup. That situation has forced Calafiori to spend large portions of the campaign filling in at left back, even though it may not be his long term position.

Defensive inconsistency could shape Chelsea’s plans

Chelsea already have several centre back options, but consistency has remained a problem across the season. Liam Rosenior’s squad includes Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Mamadou Sarr, Benoit Badiashile, Josh Acheampong, Tosin Adarabioyo and Levi Colwill.

Despite the number of players available, injuries and fluctuating form have prevented the club from establishing a settled pairing at the heart of the defence. And Fofana has had fitness issues, while others have been hit or miss from match to match.

Chelsea’s defensive stability has equally been stymied by Colwill’s long term knee injury, prompting regular rotation through the lineup. And from that perspective, a player like Calafiori could be seen as the sort of versatile solution capable of performing various roles.

The club’s recruitment strategy in recent windows has often leaned towards younger players with strong development potential. At 23, Calafiori fits that profile and already has experience competing at the highest level. Chelsea also have history when it comes to player movement between the two London clubs. In recent years the flow has usually gone the other way, with Arsenal signing players from Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal still hold strong position despite speculation

Although the interest is gathering attention, Arsenal remain in control of the situation. Calafiori has still played an important role in the squad this season and continues to receive regular minutes across competitions. In the league alone, the Italian defender has already started 17 matches for Arteta’s side. Those numbers underline that he remains a valued member of the team rather than a peripheral option.

However, his long term pathway will likely depend on where Arteta ultimately sees him fitting within the defensive structure. With Saliba and Gabriel firmly established in central defence, opportunities there may remain limited for now.

For Chelsea, the attraction is clear. A player eager to play centrally and already proven at a top club represents a tempting prospect if the opportunity arises. Whether that scenario develops into a concrete transfer battle remains uncertain, but clubs will watch Calafiori’s situation closely as the summer window approaches.
