Mike Evans explains why he chose 49ers over Bills in free agency

In his introductory press conference with the San Francisco 49ers, wide receiver Mike Evans revealed that his decision in free agency was between the Niners and Buffalo Bills.

In the end, Evans chose the Niners, agreeing to a three-year deal worth up to $60.4 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

So, what put the 49ers over the top?

Evans pointed to multiple things, including having Kyle Shanahan as a play-caller and his love for Levi's Stadium.

“So I was looking at here, Buffalo Bills, teams that needed a No. 1 wide receiver,” Evans said, per NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco. "This was my No. 1 spot on my own.”

“And [Shanahan] solidified it for me,” he added. “I’ve always been a fan of Kyle. And he just talked about how he sees me in this offense. And it made me even happier, and it was a no-brainer really after I got on the phone with him.”

“I’m super excited to every time I come to Levi’s Stadium, I see how the crowd is, I see the energy and the rich history of the San Francisco 49ers. It just excites me," Evans said.

Evans also noted that he believes the 49ers are one piece away from a Super Bowl and he is confident he's the missing piece the team needed.

“I feel like they were one piece away,” Evans stated. “And I think I’m that piece. I look forward to coming here and proving that.”

Evans steps into a wide receivers room that includes Ricky Pearsall and not much else.

The Niners are set to cut Brandon Aiyuk at some point, Jauan Jennings remains unsigned and Kendrick Bourne has moved on in free agency.

Safe to say, Evans is looking at a hefty target share in 2026.
