The last thing Liverpool need in a rebuild is to lose one of their most important players.

If Liverpool are to bounce back next season and become Premier League title contenders again they will need a solid mix of youthful energy and experienced know how.

Virgil van Dijk is signed up for at least another season and the Reds skipper will be hoping that behind him is a familiar face in Alisson Becker. The Brazil no.1 missed the defeat to Galatasaray with an injury suffered in training but isn’t expected to be out of action for long. Results when the 33-year old isn’t available tell its own story about how important he is to the club’s chances of success.

Liverpool make Alisson decision

Alisson has been linked with a return to Serie A with Juventus and Inter Milan both interested, however, according to Fabrizio Romano, both the player and Liverpool want the harmonious relationship to continue. Romano said on his YouTube channel: “He’s under contract till 2027. The message from Alisson’s camp is that the player really wants to continue at Liverpool. He really wants to fulfill his contract at Liverpool one more season, till June 2027, and then eventually consider his future.

“But at the moment, Alisson’s desire is to continue at Liverpool. Then we have to see at the end of the season, when there will be a Liverpool season review on the players, on the manager, and all the people involved at the club, what kind of decision will be made also on the goalkeeper and on the players in general. Don’t forget that Alisson already used to play in Italy for AS Roma before joining Liverpool. In that case, it depends on the club. But at the moment, from Alison, the desire is clear to continue at Liverpool.”

Alisson on Liverpool leadership

Speaking after Mohamed Salah’s sensational outburst earlier in the season, Alisson felt that his leadership credentials, and those of his teammates, were hugely important, via Liverpool’s website: “Yes, definitely. I think that's what everyone hopes from us. The expectations are that the senior players that we step up, the expectation from the club as well. That's [what] we are here for also. Of course, we are here to win games, to win titles, to perform.

“But in my opinion, I take this responsibility and I feel this responsibility that I can give more to the team than just playing well, but I can give a good contribution by being a leader to the youngest ones, to the new players. We've been here so long, so in a way we have the Liverpool way in our mentality and I think that should go on to the other players and we are the players that have to pass [it] on.”

Alisson is right, he could be replaced as a goalkeeper, but there have been too many leaders already leave and, if Robertson departs at the end of his contract, his presence will be even more important.
