New 49ers WR Mike Evans: 'I'm that piece' San Francisco was missing

Mike Evans' departure from Tampa Bay sent shockwaves through the region and inspired the same in the Bay Area.

He's happy, too, because San Francisco is where he wanted to be.

"I feel like they were one piece away, and I'm that piece," Evans said during his introductory press conference Thursday in Santa Clara, Calif.

Evans' logic, while initially surprising, makes plenty of sense. He wanted to join a contender (San Francisco finished 12-5 in 2025), considered "teams with good quarterbacks" (hello, Brock Purdy), and because he's a fan of 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive approach, Evans landed on San Francisco as his top destination.

"It was always going to be hard to leave Tampa," the wide receiver admitted. "... Football wise this was the best spot for me for sure. I've always appreciated how the Niners went about their business on the football field."

Evans brings a pedigree that includes 11 straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons and a ticket to the Pro Football Hall of Fame at some point in the future. At 6-foot-5, he's a jump ball winner, a master of snagging red-zone fades and one of the most reliable targets in must-have situations. He fills out the No. 1 receiver role San Francisco, which has been sorely missed since Brandon Aiyuk's season-ending ACL injury suffered in 2024.

As Evans said, after finishing 12-5 in an injury-riddled 2025 campaign, the 49ers may be one missing piece (plus an improvement in luck with player health) away from reaching the mountaintop. He could be the capstone to an offense that already includes dynamic superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, star tight end George Kittle and ascending quarterback Brock Purdy.

Kittle, Evans said, served as the closer who convinced Evans to pack his bags for San Francisco. Now that they're teammates, Evans couldn't possibly be more motivated entering 2026.

"Absolutely," Evans said. "I want to show that I'm still who people believe that I am and that's one of the best to ever do it."
