The Patriots have had a successful few days in free agency and, as usual, have a few of their top signings at Gillette Stadium today to speak with the media. One of those players is wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who received a mixed reaction from fans when his signing was announced.
Regardless, Doubs will inevitably add some invaluable traits to the team's current receiving corps, which has already seen Stefon Diggs depart, and one of the best parts of the 25-year-old's game is his impressive presence in the red zone. That has been one of the weakest parts of the Patriots' offense in recent years, and now Drake Maye will have a solid option to look for this fall.
That connection will be important for years to come, and it's part of the reason that the wide receiver "couldn't pass up" the opportunity to come to New England.
He shared that sentiment on Thursday, offering high praise for Maye, whom he has already spoken to since he signed with the team, and said he's impressed with the kind of player the quarterback has already shown himself to be.
Romeo Doubs on Drake Maye:
“Just his growth as a player on and off the field that’s really big. Just being able to lead the team… football is team game where each player has a role of fulfilling. I believe I have the right team to build around that.”

Drake Maye is already becoming a reason free agents want to sign with the Patriots
Since Tom Brady left the Patriots in 2020, the team has struggled to entice free-agent players to sign with a roster that desperately needs them. That only worsened as the team continued to struggle, leading to a head-coach carousel over the last three years and turning players off even more.
Now that they have an established head coach in Mike Vrabel, a seasoned offensive coordinator with Josh McDaniels, an impressive young defensive play caller, and Maye under center, free agents view the Patriots as a hot destination again.
Doubs' comments confirm that even more, and make it all the more exciting to think about what the offense will be able to do this fall, particularly with him already striking a friendship with Maye.
That chemistry will be crucial for Maye to continue on the upward trajectory he was on during his second season, especially now that he won't have Diggs to work with. Fortunately, Doubs has been compared to the veteran receiver, with most analysts considering him to be a younger and quicker version of Diggs, which is also a massive plus.
