Steelers lose $1.8 million All-Pro in free agent signing by Buccaneers

The Pittsburgh Steelers will need a new special teams ace.

Miles Killebrew has departed in free agency for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday that Killebrew is signing a one-year contract with the Bucs worth about $1.8 million.

There's an obvious connection here, too. The Bucs' new special teams coach is Danny Smith, who was the Steelers' special teams coach with Killebrew before this offseason's changes on the Pittsburgh coaching staff.

Killebrew is a two-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro for his work on special teams.

Technically, he's a safety, but his best work comes as a specialist.

Killebrew was originally a fourth-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Southern Utah.

He spent his first five NFL seasons with the Lions, and his next five seasons with the Steelers.

Killebrew played just five games in 2025 before getting injured, making five tackle.s.

He had 26 tackles in the 2023 season, then 13 in the 2024 campaign.

In his NFL career, Killebrew has played just 7.6% of his given team's defensive snaps available while playing 71.4% of his given team's available special teams snaps.

Clearly, that's what he's being brought to Tampa Bay to do, and with Smith on his side, it should work out nicely for the Buccaneers.

The Steelers, meanwhile, will have to find someone new to hold down Killebrew's role.
