Cleveland Browns Re-Signing CB Tre Avery

The Cleveland Browns have agreed to a deal to re-sign corner Tre Avery. Avery spent last season with the Browns, largely in a special teams capacity.

He's also the second depth corner with special teams use the Browns will have re-signed since free agency began. The Browns also agreed to re-sign D'Angelo Ross.

Avery only played 42 total snaps on defense for the Browns in 2025. Meanwhile, he had 109 snaps on special teams, largely operating as a gunner. Avery was temporarily released after the Browns had a particularly egregious performance on special teams against the New York Jets that played a large role in losing that game.

Avery will be another player competing for a spot on the roster for this season. Even if that doesn't work out, he could be a player that is retained on the practice squad, called up when the Browns need another player who can contribute on specials.

The Browns were one of the worst teams in the league on special teams in 2025. When head coach Kevin Stefanski was fired, the team allowed special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone to leave for the same role with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Browns special teams units will now be run by Byron Storer, who was previously the assistant special teams coach under Rich Bisaccia with the Green Bay Packers. Even as the Browns have changed coordinators, they have to this point kept some of the same players. In addition to Ross and Avery, the Browns also re-signed punter Corey Bojorquez. The only signing the Browns have made that could have a large impact on special teams that wasn't with the team last year has been tight end Jack Stoll. He spent last season with the New Orleans Saints.

The Browns continue to fill out their roster through free agency. They are likely still going to be in the market for more defensive back help including at corner. General Manager Andrew Berry puts an emphasis on finding the best 90-man roster in order to get down to the best 53. And given the team's 5-12 record, they have plenty of room for improvement, looking for opportunities to upgrade at various positions and add competition.
