CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan projected the New England Patriots to sign tight end Isaiah Likely to give quarterback Drake Maye another passing target.
New England Patriots wide receiver Romeo Doubs spoke highly of new teammate Drake Maye. The wide receiver met with the media for the first time as a member of the Patriots on Thursday afternoon.
Doubs was a key sign for the Patriots. He now gives them depth in the wide receiver room. He is also another target for May to throw to. The latter is coming off a strong sophomore season and looks to continue ascending in his third year.
Doubs talked about joining the Patriots organization. He also revealed that he has bonded with Maye already. MassLive’s Karen Guregian reported this on Thursday.
“I spoke with Drake. He’s an amazing person to be around,” Doubs said. “I love his personality, and I just love who he is as a person.”
He is excited to get to work and also begin informal workouts with his quarterback.
“I look forward to that real soon,” Doubs said, “but again, Drake’s a great guy. An amazing quarterback an amazing person. I’m glad I get to be around someone like that.”
Patriots Wideout Coming Off Strong Season
Doubs was brought in to be a playmaker for the Patriots. He could find success with Maye in that regard. The receiver is coming off a 2025 season that saw him tally 55 catches for 724 yards and six touchdowns. He now factors in as a playmaker to a group that is already teeming with promise and experience.
As it stands right now, the Patriots’ wide receiver room has a unique mix of veterans and younger players. Kayshon Boutte had 33 receptions for 551 yards and six touchdowns last season. Mack Hollins had 46 catches for 550 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie Kyle Williams also managed to get into the mix, catching 10 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns. Diggs was the de facto veteran on the team.
Now, Doubs has an opportunity to step into that role. In turn, he could also develop as his quarterback’s top option. This will be a unique role for him. He has never been a top wide receiver in the Packers‘ offense. In his rookie season, he showed his playmaking ability, but was behind receivers such as Allen Lazard and fellow rookie Christian Watson.
2023 was more of the same for him. He did make an impact in his second season, as he led the team in receiving touchdowns with eight and targeted 96. However, he was behind Jayden Reed in both receptions and yards. This made Reed the top wide receiver in the offense statistically.
Doubs was never viewed as the traditional top wide receiver in 2024 and 2025, either. He was still battling the likes of Reed and Watson, as the Packers’ offense only had so many targets to go around.
Doubs Could Take On Bigger Role With Patriots
He could take on a bigger role with the Patriots’ offense this season. It will be interesting to see how the wide receiver depth chart shakes out for the organization. There are several other options for the Patriots at the wide receiver spot. However, Doubs is a veteran with playmaking potential. He could become the top playmaker that he has wanted to be.
At the very least, he has a strong rapport with Maye. This can only be viewed as a positive thing, as the quarterback himself looks to leap in his third season. Surrounding the quarterback with weapons is certainly not the worst thing to do, and Patriots fans saw how it benefited him last season.
