The Miami Dolphins lost cornerback Kader Kohou to the Kansas City Chiefs

The Miami Dolphins secondary was viewed as one of the biggest weaknesses for the Dolphins heading into the 2025 season. That occurred due to Miami trading Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey in the offseason, and releasing cornerback Kendall Fuller.

Many expected Miami to address the secondary in the 2025 NFL Draft, but instead the team waited until the fifth-round to select a pair of defensive backs. Prior to the season, Miami signed veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas to a one-year deal, which he ended up outplaying. Douglas performed as a top-20 cornerback in the NFL and cemented himself as one of the biggest bargains in the league.

The Douglas signing was a direct result from the Dolphins suffering a key injury in their secondary. And now, that player is healthy, but he will no longer be a part of the Miami Dolphins roster.

Former Miami Dolphins Cornerback Signs With Chiefs

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that former Dolphins cornerback Kader Kohou signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kohou spent four seasons with the Dolphins and appeared in 47 total games while starting 38 games for the team. He offered the cornerback room some versatility as he played both the nickel and outsider cornerback role for the team.

Heading into the 2025 season, Kohou was slated to be the Dolphins No. 1 cornerback, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury during training camp. Kohou graded as the 35th-best cornerback in pass coverage during the 2024 seasonaccording to Pro Football Focus.

Fortunately for Kohou,NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported that the former Dolphins cornerback received medical clearance after his knee injury prior to free agency beginning. Despite Kohou being a valuable piece, the possibility of his departure seemed real due to Miami’s salary cap situation. Prior to his departure,Sports Illustrated’s Alain Poupart wrote, “The Dolphins simply don’t have the cap space to get into bidding wars for any free agents, if we’re going to be honest about it.”

Kader Kohou Message

The Dolphins have been busy, adding players on veteran minimums as they fill out their roster ahead of the 2026 season. While Kohou would have likely been a valuable presence for the team, it seems likely he was priced out by an offer from the Chiefs, or he wanted a different direction for his career based on what he posted on his social media message.

Following the news of his signing,Kohou posted on X, “Survivor remorse.”

Prior to his free agency beginning, Sports Illustrated’s Dante Collinelli had written about whether the Dolphins should re-sign Kouhou or let him leave in free agency. He wrote, “We think it’s smart to bring Kohou back. If he’s willing to play on a prove-it, one-year deal, and his injury is healing well, then he’s the perfect depth piece to add to a room that needs it.”

Now, the Dolphins will have yet another hole to fill for the 2026 season. Previously mentioned cornerback Rasul Douglas remains available on the open market, although it seems unlikely that he would accept another one-year, $1.5 million contract after his performance last season.
