Jordan Clarkson of the New York Knicks celebrates sinking a three-pointer during the second half against the Utah Jazz.

The New York Knicks entered Wednesday night searching for a spark. It turned out the answer had already been predicted hours earlier by assistant coach Maurice Cheeks.

Veteran guard Jordan Clarkson delivered one of the most impactful performances of his Knicks tenure against the Utah Jazz, erupting for 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting with five rebounds and three assists in a 134–117 victory that snapped New York’s two-game losing streak.

But according to head coach Mike Brown, the breakout night was foreshadowed well before tipoff.

GettyAssistant coach Maurice Cheeks of the New York Knicks predicted Jordan Clarkson’s breakout game.

“It was funny because Mo Cheeks — he’s been awesome,” Brown said. “All my guys have been awesome, but Mo said to me earlier today, ‘We’ve got to find a way to throw Jordan in the game because he can have a big one for us tonight. We may need it.’”

The veteran assistant’s instinct proved prescient.

Mo Cheeks’ Early Call Changes Knicks Rotation

Clarkson had largely been out of the Knicks’ rotation in recent weeks, making the performance even more surprising.

But Cheeks saw an opportunity in the matchup and encouraged Brown to give the veteran guard a chance.

When the Knicks found themselves trailing by 18 points in the first half, Brown turned to Clarkson — and the energy of the game immediately shifted.

“For him to go out and perform the way he did, you couldn’t ask for anything better,” Brown said. “It goes to show he’s not just keeping his body right, but his mind is in a good spot to go after coming in when you’re down 18 in the first half.

“Especially from him, who is a veteran who hasn’t been playing or in the rotation and all of a sudden we need him.”

Clarkson delivered across the board.

“Jordan Clarkson was huge for us,” Brown said. “A lot of guys played the right way in the second half, including Jaylen. But Clark kept us in the game when we were down.

“On top of the 27 points, he had five offensive rebounds and that helped slow their transition game down. Just a whale of a game by Jordan in a lot of different areas.”

Knicks Flip the Game After Halftime

Early on, the Jazz appeared poised to run away with the game.

Utah exploded for 41 points in the first quarter and built an 18-point first-half lead, fueled by blistering shooting from beyond the arc. The Jazz knocked down 14 of their first 21 three-point attempts, leaving the Knicks scrambling defensively.

But New York regrouped before halftime.

The Knicks cut the deficit to single digits before the break and then unleashed a 20–4 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to seize control.

Clarkson played a central role in the turnaround. The Filipino-American guard exploded for 19 points in the second half.

He scored or assisted on four baskets during the run and added two free throws, punctuating the surge with back-to-back baskets that pushed the Knicks ahead 101–94 less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

By the final buzzer, the Knicks had outscored the Jazz 78–52 in the second half.

Clarkson Responds to Halftime Accountability

Clarkson said the comeback started with a blunt halftime conversation inside the locker room.

“It was our halftime speech, in terms of how we came at each other, where we tried to hold each other accountable,” Clarkson said, via the New York Post. “And then just came out here and wanted to win.”

When asked what the message was, Clarkson didn’t sugarcoat it.

“Get our [expletive] together,” he said, adding that the discussion began with the coaching staff before the players took over.

Clarkson’s Utah Return Comes Full Circle

The performance carried extra meaning for Clarkson.

The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year spent five-and-a-half seasons with Utah, becoming one of the franchise’s most dynamic bench scorers before reaching a buyout agreement last offseason.

Clarkson later signed with the Knicks on a veteran minimum contract, immediately contributing in key moments earlier in the season — including the team’s Christmas Day victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers and their NBA Cup title win against the San Antonio Spurs.

But when the Knicks hit a 2–9 slump in January, Clarkson’s role diminished.

Wednesday’s performance served as a reminder of the value experienced scorers bring late in the season. Clarkson’s professionalism through fluctuating minutes — along with his ability to deliver instant offense — could become a valuable weapon for New York as the playoffs approach.

If the Knicks need a quick scoring burst or a steady veteran presence in a tight postseason game, Clarkson has already shown he can be ready when the moment calls.
