Analyst makes stunning claim over Falcons' Tua Tagovailoa free agency signing

The Atlanta Falcons and their quarterback room are a fascinating watch.

With Michael Penix Jr. out for at least the start of the 2026 season, the franchise moved on from Kirk Cousins and shifted its attention to Tua Tagovailoa.

Set to play on a minimum contract according to reports, the Falcons could have gotten the best of both worlds. Tua is a different option to Penix and has gotten him for next to nothing.

And if Tua plays well (like Sam Darnold in Seattle), then the Falcons could have their franchise QB for the next handful of years.

Because of that sort of situation, NFL.com's Matt Okada has a rather eyebrow-raising comment on Atlanta's signing of Tua.

"In terms of investment versus potential return, this might be the smartest move of the entire offseason," Okada wrote. "With Miami releasing Tagovailoa, and carrying all of his dead money, the Falcons were able to land the veteran starter for the minimum. And it couldn't make more sense.

"For nearly no risk, the Falcons have landed solid QB competition, a potential part-time starter in 2026 ... and maybe even a longer-term answer, if things go well."

Tua has chance at career revival

We've seen Baker Mayfield do it, seen Sam Darnold do it, and, to an extent, Geno Smith do it (with the Seahawks), and given the weapons Tua will have in Atlanta, his name could be added to that list.

Of course, we are projecting a lot here, but there is no denying that Tua has a great chance to reestablish himself in the league.

With Bijan Robinson and Drake London as his top weapons, Tua could find some form and put the Falcons in a tricky position as it pertains to the quarterback position long-term.

And for that reason, the Falcons, as Okada states, could have just made the smartest move of free agency.
