Why the Chargers Brought Back Denzel Perryman in Free Agency

A season ago, the Bolts run defense struggled in the first chunk of the season when Khalil Mack was out with an elbow injury. But Perryman missed five games in that stretch with an injury of his own, an absence that surely affected that phase.

Plus, Perryman has served as a mentor to the Chargers other linebackers — especially Daiyan Henley — and has also helped guide others such as Troy Dye, Junior Colson and Marlowe Wax.

And with the Chargers transitioning under new Defensive Coordinator Chris O'Leary, not to mention new linebackers coach Sean Spence after NaVorro Bowman stepped away to focus on his family, Perryman's presence will surely be relied upon in 2026.

At this point in his career, Perryman is well-aware of the role he has carved out in the Bolts organization.

But he also fits that role perfectly and is a respected member of the locker room who the Bolts will be glad to have back for another season.
