Harvey Elliott has little time left on the pitch for Aston Villa after he made his eight appearance in all competitions against Lille in the Europa League.

The Englishman arrived on loan with what seemed like an obligation to buy for £35million, however that deal did have targets that must be hit to automatically trigger that purchase.

It was a crucial aspect of the deal with Liverpool, as it allowed Aston Villa more wiggle room under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

However, now the midfielder is looking likely to be stuck in limbo at Villa Park for the rest of the 2025-2026 campaign due to that very reason; here’s why.

Why Harvey Elliott only has one game left for Aston Villa

Early into his time at Villa Park, Elliott quickly found himself out of Unai Emery’s plans, who decided he was a player he did not want to keep around.

However, the loan deal for Elliott had a low appearance number included to make the deal permanent. Once Elliott hits 10 games for Villa, the £35m option will trigger.

Hitting that appearance threshold seems unlikely, and now the Liverpool loanee can only look forward to one game in the Aston Villa colours due to that.

Against Lille, Elliott was handed his eight appearance, although, he did not have much time to impact proceedings.

Emery inserted Elliott into the action in the 90th minute but in the brief spell, he did not put a foot wrong.

The 22-year-old completed 100 per cent of his passes, won 100 per cent of his ground duels and won his only attempted tackle of the game, as per Sofascore.

He took just eight touches which also included completing one dribble attempted as well.

Statistic Total

Passes completed 5/5

Ground duels won 2/2

Tackles won 1/1

Touches 8

Dribbles completed 1/1

Overall, his brief cameo proved again that there is a quality player in there. However, one that simply did not fit Emery’s way of playing.

Why Elliott is another victim of Aston Villa’s summer window

Signing a player like Elliott who did not fit into the grand scheme of Emery’s plans was not just a one-off mistake on Villa’s part.

The Premier League side had made the exact same error in relation to Evann Guessand.

The Ivorian was lucky in the sense he was signed permanently by Aston Villa, which meant he could then go out on loan to Crystal Palace.

At the London club, he has been impressing much more. Unfortunately for Elliott, he did not have that luxury.

Liverpool, who had presumed Elliott would be off their books this summer, decided against recalling the Englishman and while reports of talks of restructuring the loan emerged, nothing fruitful ever came out of that.

Elliott, instead, has been left to waste away for much of this season, and supporters can now look forward to watching the 22-year-old just one more time.
