Chelsea are reportedly among the clubs considering a summer move for Cristian Romero, with the Tottenham Hotspur defender emerging as a potential transfer target ahead of the next window.
According to sources cited by ICFootballNews, Chelsea are monitoring Romero’s situation as they look to strengthen their defensive options for the 2026–27 season. The Argentine centre-back has established himself as one of Tottenham’s most important players in recent years, but speculation about his long-term future continues to grow as several clubs assess possible summer reinforcements.
Romero joined Tottenham permanently from Atalanta BC in 2022 after initially arriving on loan, and he quickly became a key figure in the club’s defence. Known for his aggressive style, strong tackling and leadership qualities, the defender has built a reputation as one of the most combative defenders in the Premier League.
CHELSEA’s reported interest comes as the club continues to reshape its squad. Despite signing several defenders in recent transfer windows, the London side are believed to be exploring options to add more experience and defensive authority to their back line. Romero’s proven Premier League pedigree and international experience with Argentina national football team have reportedly made him an appealing candidate.
However, securing the defender’s signature would likely prove complicated. Tottenham are traditionally reluctant to sell key players to direct domestic rivals, particularly another London club. Any potential deal would likely require a significant transfer fee, and Spurs would almost certainly prefer to sell abroad rather than strengthen a Premier League competitor.
Romero has also been linked with interest from clubs in Spain and Italy, including reported admiration from Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, both of whom are believed to be monitoring experienced defenders ahead of the summer.
Where would Romero prefer to go?
If Romero were to leave Tottenham, his preference might ultimately depend on both sporting ambition and playing style. The Argentine defender has often spoken about his competitive mentality, and a move to a club consistently competing for major honours could be attractive.
CHELSEA would offer the advantage of remaining in the Premier League while joining a club capable of rebuilding quickly with significant financial backing. However, the historical rivalry between Tottenham and Chelsea could complicate such a move from both a club and supporter perspective.
A transfer abroad could therefore appear more realistic. Spanish clubs such as Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid could appeal to Romero’s aggressive defensive style and tactical discipline, while also offering the opportunity to compete regularly in the UEFA Champions League.
Ultimately, if Romero decides to leave Tottenham, a move outside England may prove the most likely outcome.
