Opinion: Joao Pedro's form doesn't change one of the most obvious facts of the Todd Boehly era at Chelsea

The signing of Joao Pedro is certainly one thing that Chelsea have got right since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Before Chelsea’s game against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Pedro was on a run of 11 goals in 12 matches.

Liam Rosenior has spoken about Pedro’s goalscoring form, putting it down to the positions that he is now taking up. A lot of people are praising the striker, but the same cannot be said about Cole Palmer.

Cole Palmer has been Chelsea’s best signing under Todd Boehly, not Joao Pedro

Palmer was Chelsea’s best player in the previous two seasons but has come in for criticism this term for some of his performances. A lack of consistency, largely because of injury, does not change the fact that Boehly and Co have not made a better signing than him, though.

For some, it has clearly become easy to forget Palmer’s impact during his first two years at Stamford Bridge because of his current form and Pedro’s goalscoring run.

However, it was only last summer when Palmer single-handedly won Chelsea the Club World Cup, which was shortly after he inspired the Blues to a comeback win in the Conference League final against Real Betis.

This is a player who has more than 50 goals and 30 assists for Chelsea since 2023. The Blues paid just £40m for that; it is one of the greatest deals that the Premier League has ever seen.

Even as he shines now, Pedro has given a lot of credit to Palmer for his success. Without him, the Brazilian would probably not even be on the spectacular run of form supporters have seen.

Joao Pedro vs Cole Palmer this season

There is no denying that Pedro is having a stronger campaign than Palmer. For example, in the Premier League, Pedro has scored 14 goals and provided five assists.

In contrast, Palmer has scored nine goals and set up just one. However, Pedro has played a significantly greater number of minutes than his teammate.

As per WhoScored, the Brazil international has played 2,156 minutes, while Palmer has only played 1,246. With Pedro’s game time this season, the England star would have the same number of goals as his teammate, if not more.
