Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill was pictured in training for the first time since August at Cobham this week.

It got plenty of fans excited that the 23-year-old could be set for an imminent return to the first-team squad.

However, speaking in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, head coach Liam Rosenior tried to manage expectations by stating Colwill was only doing some “modified training”.

The defender was subsequently not named in the matchday squad for the match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.

Why didn’t Colwill feature against PSG?

Rosenior’s comments about Colwill’s “modified” training schedule suggest he isn’t really ready for first-team football as things stand. The Daily Mail recently gave an update on his fitness, which played down hopes that he will be playing anytime soon:

“Colwill has some way to go before we see him in an actual game.”

It should be pointed out that ACL injuries usually take a minimum of nine months to recover from. Colwill has only been sidelined for seven.

While it appears that the England international is making quicker-than-expected progress, expectations do need to be managed. Buy a Levi Colwill shirt from the official Chelsea store here.

Jamie Gittens is back available for selection, having spent six weeks on the treatment table with a hamstring injury. He last played in the 3-2 win over West Ham in late January.

Estevao had missed the last five games with his own hamstring issue, but he has been training this week, and he is likely to feature in upcoming fixtures. It is not 100% certain, though, that he will face Newcastle on Saturday evening.
