49ers sign $4.5 million free agent released by Packers

The San Francisco 49ers spotted a release by the Green Bay Packers earlier this week that would help them out.

Late Thursday night, they dished out a $4.5 million contract to take advantage.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that the 49ers are signing cornerback Nate Hobbs to a one-year, $4.5 million deal in free agency only a few days after Green Bay released Hobbs.

Hobbs is a 26-year old cornerback who measures up at 6-feet tall and 195 pounds.

He's originally from Louisville, Kentucky, and he went to college at the University of Illinois before the Raiders made him a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Hobbs spent his first four NFL seasons with the Raiders. In his 51 games with Vegas, he made three interceptions, forced three fumbles and had 281 tackles.

The Packers signed Hobbs in free agency before the 2025 season to help out what was a really weak cornerback spot on the depth chart, and he did what he could, although injuries hurt his season a bit.

In 2025, Hobbs ended up playing in 11 games and made 27 tackles. He had just two passes defensed. The fit didn't work out as well as the Packers might have hoped.

For the 49ers, Hobbs will again have a decent role, but he's not entering quite as weak a secondary as he was in Green Bay.

The Packers will continue to look for ways to improve at cornerback, while the 49ers clearly felt that they could help Hobbs play to the best of his ability and brought him aboard to try and do that.
